Moeraki

A sleepy fishing village on the wild Otago coast, Moeraki has a rich Maori, whaling and sealing history. Today it is most famous for the Moeraki boulders, perfectly round geological wonders, many millions of years old.

Moeraki is a 45 minute walk from the village along the beach or the Millennium Walkway to the boulders. On the cliffs above the boulders is the Moeraki Cafe and Gift Shop. The deck is a great place to soak up the spectacular coastal views over a coffee or bowl of fresh seafood chowder. The kids will enjoy feeding the alpaca and deer at the farm next door.

Keep a careful eye out for yellow-eyed and blue penguins, seals and seabirds. They are common sights along the coast.

Back in the village, visit Fleur's Place, a very special restaurant, cafe and bar with a unique character, overlooking the sea. Choose one of the seafood dishes where you know the catch will have been freshly landed directly from the colourful little fishing boats that bob in the harbour.

Book a fishing charter and enjoy a memorable trip fishing and sightseeing along one of New Zealand's most pristine coastlines. Cruise in waters rich with sealife - dolphins, albatross, seals and sea lions.

Accommodation at Moeraki includes self-catering motels, a holiday park with cabins, campervan and campsites, and bed and breakfast options.
