We encourage all cruise passengers to book a shore excursion though the ship.
Our regular scheduled scenic train tours depart the Railway Station in Dunedin City.
After making your own way to the Dunedin Railway Station (details below) you will board the train to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Taieri Gorge or The Seasider. A detailed description of the public train services can be discovered elsewhere on this site. If you wish to choose one of these option we highly recommend booking in advance as the trains often sell out on days with a cruise ship in town. You can book through the book here button or contact us by email.
Please note: on some days we do not have the capacity to run a public train trip, please refer to our timetable. If your ship cannot make it into port in time for your trip you will receive a refund.
GETTING TO THE STATION
The train that departs the wharf is the shore excursion that you must book through your cruise company.
If you are booked on our regular service or short 90 minute trip you will need to get to the Railway Station in Dunedin which is 20 minutes drive away.
For an extra $45 per person you can book a return shuttle to the station and a short city sights tour. This can be booked online at the same time as your train.
Alternatively, you can get the regular shuttle which usually runs every five minutes to the Octagon and then it is a five minute walk down to the station.
Late arriving or early departing ships:
The Taieri Gorge train departs Dunedin Station at 9.30am. If you are on one of a small number of cruises that dock after 8.45am (or if your cruise arrives a bit late) you can still take the train by also booking a port transfer and sightseeing option (see below). We will automatically change your booking to be a coach/train combo. You will take a coach to the turn around point and then return to the city by train. If your ship unexpectedly arrives late please see the Headfirst-shuttle team on the wharf as soon as you can and well see what is possible on the day.
If you are one of the very few early departing ships (5pm) the itinerary including a Castle visit may also be altered toa coach/train combo and you will visit the Castle before a coach ride to join the train. Please disembark the ship as soon as you can and locate the 'Headfirst' crew inside the i-site shed.
The shorter Seasider-Highlights trips depart at 10am 11.50am and 2pm.
you can also book other sightseeing options at the same time as you book your train trip and shuttle to the station.
- For $95 per person (plus the cost of the train) you can book the Port Shuttle, the short City Sights Trip and a visit to the famous Larnach Castle. www.larnachcastle.co.nz
