Dunedin Railways presents a six day, five night guided rail tour of the West Coast departing Dunedin. For those who enjoy the romance and adventure of rail travel this is a trip not to be missed. Highlights include: crossing the Southern Alps at Arthurs Pass, the Denniston Mine area and spectacular Incline remains, the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, time in Hokitika with optional visits to the Treetops experience (south of Hokitika) and Shanty Town in Greymouth.

Day 1 Dunedin to Ashburton
Departing Dunedin in the a.m; travel in style along the East Coast of the South Island towards Ashburton enjoying the magnificent views through panoramic windows. Bring your own picnic lunch, or enjoy lunch at the Railway Cafe in Timaru before heading north to Ashburton where you will be transferred to your comfortable hotel. Here you will have the opportunity to get to know you travelling companions over dinner.
Day 2 Ashburton to Greymouth
After breakfast transfer back to the train and continue the journey north to Rolleston. From here the train heads west and travels along the Midland Line across the South Island to the rugged West Coast.
Once into the foothills, we will travel through high country farmlands and forests, gorges, travelling alongside and across the Waimakariri River before traversing the magnificent Southern Alps, gateway to the West Coast.
Enjoy a buffet dinner this evening at the hotel in Greymouth with your companions.

Day 3 Greymouth to Reefton, Denniston Plateau, Punakaiki, Westport return
After breakfast, depart by coach and travel through the Grey River Valley, Reefton, Inangahua Junction, the Lower Buller River Gorge, the coast of Waimangaroa, and up the hill to the Denniston Plateau where you will discover the history of the harsh conditions endured by the pioneers who once called this place home.
Our knowledgeable train manager will lead a tour of this fascinating open-air museum, where much of the early coal mining history is displayed on information panels along with relics and the remaining historic buildings. The Department of Conservation have reinstated the top part of the world-famous Denniston Incline which is a marvel in itself to experience.
Returning to Greymouth this afternoon via Westport and historic Charleston, enjoy the beautiful views of the West Coast and the Tasman Sea. A highlight on this stretch of highway is the geologically impressive Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki. There will be the opportunity to stop and take photos of the maginificent seascape. You’ll have a free evening tonight in Greymouth to explore.

Day 4 Greymouth with optional tours as below
Following breakfast, depart for a day's trip to Hokitika, travelling by coach. Choose some free time to yourself, or take advantage of our two optional excursions:
MORNING OPTION 1: Visit the Treetops Walk and Café, walking along a high-sided platform/walkway 20m above the rainforest floor. At over 450m long this easy-access platform allows you to experience life in the canopy of the majestic Rimu and Kamahi trees. This option costs $49.00
Lunch in the café is included in this option before we head back to Hokitika early afternoon. Choose some free time experiencing the historic and retail options available in the town which has a proud history of its early gold mining, forestry and tourism activity or follow up with our afternoon option.
AFTERNOON OPTION 2: Departing at 3.30pm, visit Shanty Town including a Steam train, gold panning, and dinner at Shanty Town with return transfers from the hotel. This option cost $69.00
Day 5 Greymouth to Ashburton
Enjoy a hearty breakfast before transferring back to the Station, bidding farewell to Greymouth and the West Coast. The journey will return over the Southern Alps to Ashburton. A packed lunch will be provided along the way, and a farewell dinner with your travelling companions and friends at the Hotel Ashburton.

Day 6 Ashburton to Dunedin
After breakfast, transfer to the train to travel back down the coast. A short lunch stop in Timaru with arrival at Dunedin Railway Station at approximately 4.30pm.
