Dunedin Railways' trains are a combination of heritage and modern carriages. When booking you can request to be seated in a certain type of carriage and although we can not guarantee your request, we will do our absolute best to suit you according to your needs. We have one wheelchair accessible carriage – please enquire about availability when booking. All our carriages have toilet facilities.
All our trains (with the exception of the Silver Fern) are hauled by DJ class which is a diesel electric engine. Built by Mitsubishi in 1968 and 1969, these locomotives were used by New Zealand Railways. Five of these were purchased by Dunedin Railways in 1992 and a further DJ was purchased in 2009 bringing the total owned locomotives to six.
The Dunedin Silver Fern Rail Car
The Dunedin Silver Fern is a luxurious rail car formally known as the Silver Fern and famed for it's use on the North Island main trunk line between Wellington and Auckland from 1972 to 1991. Built in Japan by Toshiba and Kawasaki there were originally three of these railcars. Dunedin Railways now holds the lease of RM24 and it runs regular short trips and is a popular choice for charters.
