The Seasider  trip runs north of Dunedin on a section of railway which is considered a highlight in the rail network in New Zealand.

Departing from the magnificent railway station in downtown Dunedin, this train travels along the edge of the Otago harbour, considered one of the most picturesque in the world, before climbing the gentle slopes above the port town of Port Chalmers. Over the hill the train emerges onto the dazzling splendor or Blueskin Bay revealing beautiful views over bays, inlets and beaches to reach the busy highway town of Palmerston. The train then continues north passing through farm land and more coastal scenery before reaching Moeraki 2.5 hours after leaving Dunedin.

Along the way, we slow down at points of particular beauty or interest, giving you the opportunity to get that perfect photo.

Listen to the fascinating live commentary given by our train manager and learn about the remarkable history of the area.

Enjoy refreshments from the comfort of your seat all while gazing out the windows on the sparkling sea and rugged coast. Your train will be the Luxurious 94 seat  Silver Fern Railcar.

The Moeraki  Seasider trip gives you two hours at the spectacular Moeraki Boulders were you can marvel at the world famous boulders and/or have lunch at the Moeraki Boulders Bar and Café.  The fish  lunch is a specialty as they catch their own fish of the coast.  There is also a well stocked souvenir shop in the Café & Bar complex.

The Train stops on a road crossing about 500m walk from the Café & Bar.  You do need to disembark onto the road so you need to have the mobility to do this (like climbing up/down a three step ladder) and to walk to the café.  The boulders are a further 500m or so down the beach or sand-dune walking track.  Please note that the train does not stop at Moeraki village which is about a 50 minute walk from the boulders and away from the railway line.

The Seasider continues to Oamaru  and spends an hour there before returning to pick you up.

If you book online select’  ‘The Seasider’ North bound’ (or Southbound if you are starting your trip in Oamaru) and then select the Moeraki option on the rates page.

The itinerary you will receive  currently only shows the times it arrives and departs Oamaru (we are working to fix this).

The train departs Dunedin at 9.30am arriving at the Moeraki Café & Bar Road crossing at 12pm. You will be picked up at 2pm returning to Dunedin at 4.30pm.
